The Canadian Examining Board of Health Care
Practitioners, a certified educational institution by the
Minister of Human Resources under Sections 118.5 and 118.6
of the Income Tax Act, is a complementary health care organization
which has, since 1991, set professional and measurable working
standards for the field of complementary health care.
This has been done in order to promote and support effective,
safe, and ethical holistic health care practices. In order to receive Board
designations -- recognized by the Holistic Practitioners Business
Bylaw of Toronto and federally recognized across Canada --
practitioners must have graduated from one of our 27 approved institutions
which teach complementary health care programs that meet our
stringent professional standards.
Background
During the past
decade the interest in the field of complementary medicine in
North America has increased considerably. A variety of
factors ranging from the negative impact of western
pharmaceutical products to a search for cost efficient
healthcare have contributed to a growing interest in this
sector of health services.
The study of specializations in alternative
medicine and the desire to make a career choice in this field
is rapidly increasing. Recognition of a particular
specialization in alternative medicine as complementary to
allopathic treatment is leading to a greater need to prepare
well-trained practitioners in the respective areas of
alternative medicine.
Consequently, there is an imminent need to
ensure high standards of skills development for the
alternative medicine practitioner and quality care and safety
for the consumer. The Canadian Examining Board of Health Care
Practitioners Inc. (CEBHCP) has undertaken the challenge of
developing and maintaining a standard of professional
qualifications and practice in the field of alternative
medicine.
The Canadian Examining Board of Health Care
Practitioners is providing a leadership role to enhance the
credibility of the field of alternative medicine. In pursuing
this goal the CEBHCP awards designations to those
who meet the educational criteria for their respective field
of study.
1. Curriculum Development
It
is imperative that any recipient of a body of knowledge and
skills in the field of alternative medicine becomes effective
in the practice of specialization. The CEBHCP reaches
out to the teaching facilities involved in this field to
assess the respective curricula and determine their course
content for possible upgrading.
2. Continuing
Education
In order to keep abreast of new
knowledge and skills every practitioner is required to take
advantage of continuing education sponsored by the CEBHCP.
3. Accreditation of Teaching Centres
With a view to ensuring high standards of
knowledge and skills the CEBHCP has established a process of
accreditation of learning centres. Board-approval is
issued to Centres complying with CEBHCP standards.
4. Certification of Graduates
Based on
the recommendations by the teaching centres, graduates are
awarded certification for their respective field of expertise.
5. Public Education
The CEBHCP is
making its presence known in the field of complementary
medicine through a number of initiatives such as major
conferences, seminars and workshops opened to the health care
practitioners and public.
6. International
Accreditation and Certification
Through the
international network of education institutions and
practitioners the CEBHCP has undertaken to process
international accreditation and certification of graduates.
7. Research and Publication
At this
stage of development of complementary medicine the CEBHCP sees
the value in facilitating the research associated with the
respective specializations and validates the appropriate
treatment modalities.
